Dust in the Wind

Kerry Livgren·arr. Sungha Jung

Dust in the Wind by Kansas is one of the most beloved acoustic guitar pieces in rock history, and Sungha Jung's fingerstyle arrangement captures its meditative quality with warmth and simplicity. The original song's arpeggiated guitar pattern — played by Kerry Livgren — already sounds like fingerstyle, making this one of the most natural transitions from a popular song to a solo guitar arrangement.

The core technique is a rolling arpeggio pattern across six strings, outlining each chord in a continuous flowing motion. For beginners, this pattern is an ideal introduction to right-hand finger assignment: thumb handles the bass strings, index covers the third string, middle the second, and ring the first. Practicing this assignment cleanly before applying it to the chord progression will accelerate progress significantly.

The chord progression moves through C, Am, G, Dm, and F in a cycle that repeats with gentle variation. None of the chord shapes are unusual — players with a few months of experience will recognize them all. The challenge is maintaining the arpeggio pattern smoothly through each chord change without interrupting the flow.

Jung's arrangement stays faithful to the original's spirit: unhurried, introspective, and delicate. Resist the urge to rush. The piece works at a slow tempo and gains nothing from speed.

Dust in the Wind is an excellent first fingerstyle piece for players transitioning from strumming to picking patterns.
