Moonlight Sonata

Marcin·arr. Marcin

About This Piece

Marcin's arrangement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 "Moonlight" (Op. 27, No. 2) has over 13 million views and is widely considered one of the greatest solo guitar arrangements of a classical work. The first movement's famous triplet arpeggios are transformed into something that feels written for guitar rather than transcribed from piano.

The third movement — usually reserved for advanced pianists — is also included, making this a complete and demanding arrangement.

Technical Overview

Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata presents unique challenges when translated to guitar:

  • Continuous triplet motion: The first movement's flowing triplets must remain even and uninterrupted for several minutes
  • Three-voice texture: Bass, inner voice, and melody must be clearly differentiated in tone and dynamics
  • Two-hand tapping in the third movement: The rapid arpeggios of the presto movement require tapping techniques to achieve at tempo

Learning Path

Start with the first movement only — it's the most recognisable and the most manageable. The third movement is a separate study entirely and should only be approached once the first is fully mastered.
